Sunwing and WestJet Stop Cuba Flights Amid Fuel Shortage

Sunwing and WestJet Stop Cuba Flights Amid Fuel Shortage

Post by : Shweta

Sunwing Vacations and WestJet Vacations have confirmed that all operations to Cuba are on hold until October 2026, triggered by a severe fuel crisis affecting travel and tourism on the island.

As per the company's announcement, flights and vacation packages to Cuba are canceled from June 20 to October 9. This suspension targets key tourist locales, including Varadero and Cayo Coco, popular among Canadian holidaymakers.

The move comes as Cuba grapples with alarming shortages of gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel. These deficits have caused extensive power outages and disrupted essential services nationwide. Earlier this year, multiple airlines, including Air Canada, curbed or halted operations due to inconsistent fuel availability at Cuban airports.

Travel agencies report that the crisis complicates the ability to ensure safe and consistent flight operations. The lack of assured aviation fuel access has forced airlines to cancel flights and modify travel arrangements.

Despite this situation, Sunwing Vacations Group will still provide travel packages to other destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America, with popular beach sites remaining unaffected by the crisis.

Services to Cuba are anticipated to resume gradually later in October, with flights to Varadero and Cayo Coco set to restart on October 10, and additional destinations to follow.

Passengers who have already booked trips to Cuba during the suspension will be contacted with alternative travel options or booking adjustments available to them.

The situation underscores the severe impact of Cuba's energy crisis on its tourism industry, a vital revenue source. Fuel shortages are not only disrupting flights but are also diminishing the number of international tourists, leading to limited activity in many tourist areas.

In summary, the suspension underscores the ongoing challenges faced by airlines and travelers as fuel shortages continue to disrupt operations in the region.
