A tragic suicide bombing occurred near Quetta in Pakistan's Balochistan province, resulting in the deaths of at least 24 individuals and injuries to more than 70 others, as reported by local officials and rescue teams. The devastating explosion took place near the Chaman Phatak railway crossing as a passenger train, carrying security personnel and their families, traversed the area. The impact caused vast destruction, derailing several train cars and sending passengers and nearby residents into a state of panic.
Authorities stated that the assailant utilized a vehicle packed with explosives that detonated close to the train in motion. The blast's force overturned multiple train coaches and set fire to at least two of them. Thick black smoke billowed from the wreckage as rescue workers, along with local citizens, hurried to assist trapped passengers. Social media footage depicted scenes of chaos, damaged railway tracks, and emergency teams ferrying the injured from the site.
Reports indicated that numerous victims were members of Pakistan's security forces and their relatives, who were travelling ahead of the Eid festivities. Several civilians residing near the railway line sustained injuries when the explosion damaged local homes, shops, and parked vehicles. Authorities declared a state of emergency in Quetta's hospitals, summoning medical staff to attend to the numerous wounded, with some in grave condition.
The outlawed separatist faction Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) asserted responsibility for the attack. In a statement distributed online, the group mentioned that the bombing specifically targeted security personnel aboard the train. Pakistani authorities characterized the incident as a suicide attack, though investigations are ongoing to ascertain all details concerning the bomber and any support networks involved. Security forces cordoned off the area and initiated a search operation promptly after the blast.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan condemned the act strongly, labeling it a “cowardly act of terrorism.” President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and directed officials to ensure the best medical resources for those wounded. Government representatives stated that Pakistan will persist in operations against militant and separatist factions responsible for violence across the nation.
Balochistan, known as the largest yet least developed province of Pakistan, has endured insurgency and militant acts for several years. Various separatist organizations in the area have consistently targeted security personnel, railway infrastructure, government assets, and developmental projects. Security analysts note an uptick in attacks in the province recently, raising apprehensions regarding public safety and regional stability. This latest bombing is considered one of the most lethal assaults on railway transport in Pakistan in recent times.
