On Monday, a leader of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) unveiled a three-month humanitarian ceasefire, following efforts from global leaders, including US President Donald Trump, aimed at terminating the protracted conflict. This significant announcement occurs amidst ongoing initiatives by the US, UAE, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia—collectively referred to as the Quad—to facilitate a pause in hostilities and initiate peace negotiations.
In his public statement, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the RSF chief, emphasized that the ceasefire would take effect immediately and last for three months. He urged the Quad nations to influence Sudan's military to engage in the peace dialogues. This declaration came as a surprise, considering the RSF had recently executed drone strikes against military targets.
The current strife in Sudan commenced in April 2023, stemming from disputes concerning the integration of the RSF and the Sudanese army. The ongoing war has inflicted considerable destruction, resulting in tens of thousands of civilian casualties and triggering widespread famine. The RSF, which seized control of the Darfur region following the capture of El Fasher city in late October, faces accusations of severe attacks and ethnic violence. Both General Dagalo and the army leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, have been subjected to sanctions by the United States.
General al-Burhan dismissed the Quad’s proposed peace plan as being skewed in favor of the RSF, asserting that no faction within Sudan would accept the RSF or involve them in future resolutions. The ongoing violence has led to a profound division in the nation and instigated a severe humanitarian crisis.
The RSF's ceasefire announcement represents a potential opportunity to diminish violence and pave the way for dialogues. Nonetheless, given the recent hostilities and entrenched distrust between the factions, the effectiveness of this ceasefire hinges on collaboration among all involved parties. The global community remains vigilant, aspiring for enduring peace in Sudan.
