The Supreme Court in Spain has decided to provisionally release Santos Cerdan, a former high-ranking official within the ruling Socialist Party, citing a diminished risk of tampering with evidence. Cerdan had been in custody since June due to an extensive corruption probe.
This investigation focuses on allegations that high-ranking officials linked to the government accepted kickbacks from firms in return for public works contracts. Prosecutors assert that these contracts were awarded through a scheme favoring select businesses, thereby violating fair competition laws. Cerdan faces charges related to participation in a criminal organization alongside accusations of bribery and influence-peddling.
The Supreme Court clarified that the provisional release of Cerdan does not equate to an exoneration from charges. He will be required to adhere to strict legal parameters during the ongoing probe and will be closely monitored to prevent interference with the investigation.
