Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar Praised After Flydubai Flight Incident

Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar Praised After Flydubai Flight Incident

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar has received international attention after a serious incident aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30. Machchhar was reportedly injured during a confrontation in the cockpit. Israeli officials said the co-pilot attacked him and attempted to take control of the aircraft. The exact circumstances and motive remain under investigation, and authorities have cautioned against drawing premature conclusions. Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar reportedly managed to open the cockpit door. This allowed passengers and crew members to enter the flight deck and help restrain the other pilot. Additional Flydubai pilots who were travelling as passengers then assisted with the aircraft's operation.

What Happened Aboard Flydubai FZ1073?

The Flydubai FZ1073 flight was operating from Dubai to Tel Aviv when a confrontation developed inside the cockpit. According to Israeli officials cited by Reuters, Machchhar was stabbed during the incident. Flight-tracking information showed that the aircraft subsequently experienced a dramatic loss of altitude, falling by roughly 14,000 feet in less than a minute. Reuters reported that passengers and crew members eventually gained access to the cockpit and helped subdue the attacker. Two additional pilots travelling on the aircraft then assisted in stabilising the flight and preparing it for an emergency landing. The details surrounding the confrontation have not been fully established. Flydubai and aviation authorities have urged caution while investigators work to determine what happened inside the flight deck.

Emergency Landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia

Following the cockpit incident, the aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia. The Boeing 737 aircraft landed safely at Tabuk Airport, where the injured pilots received medical attention. Reports said Machchhar was taken to hospital for treatment. The aircraft had 174 people on board, according to Reuters. After the emergency situation was brought under control, passengers were able to continue their journey towards Israel. The safe landing brought an end to an extremely serious situation that had developed while the aircraft was in the air.

How Passengers and Crew Helped

One of the key developments in the incident was the intervention of people travelling inside the aircraft. Reports said that after the cockpit door became accessible, passengers and crew members entered the flight deck and helped restrain the co-pilot. Off-duty Flydubai pilots who were also travelling on the aircraft subsequently helped operate the plane. The Guardian reported that Machchhar was injured on the cockpit floor when he managed to activate the mechanism that opened the cockpit door, allowing others to intervene. This sequence of events became central to reports about how the aircraft was eventually stabilised and diverted safely.

Narendra Modi Praises Captain Smit Machchhar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly praised Captain Smit Machchhar following the incident. Reuters reported that Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu both hailed the Indian pilot after the emergency. Modi also spoke with Machchhar's family and said Indian missions were providing assistance to him. Modi described Machchhar as a hero and highlighted his courage while facing serious danger. His comments came as the injured pilot continued receiving medical treatment in Saudi Arabia. Netanyahu also praised Machchhar's actions during the incident and credited him with helping prevent a potentially larger disaster.

Who Is Smit Machchhar?

Captain Smit Machchhar is an Indian commercial pilot who has worked with Flydubai since 2022. Before joining Flydubai, Machchhar spent more than a decade with Indian airline SpiceJet. Hindustan Times reported, citing his professional profile, that he had served as a senior commander and line training captain and had extensive experience flying Boeing 737 aircraft. His professional experience became significant during the FZ1073 emergency because the aircraft involved was a Boeing 737 MAX 8. Reports said Machchhar had accumulated thousands of flying hours on Boeing 737 aircraft before joining Flydubai. His experience and role as the aircraft's captain have drawn attention following the incident.

Smit Machchhar's Condition

After the aircraft landed at Tabuk, Machchhar was taken to hospital for treatment. Indian authorities have been coordinating with Saudi officials and Machchhar's family. Reports published on October 1 said that the pilot was in stable condition following medical treatment. The Indian government has also been involved in providing assistance to the pilot and his family while he remains under medical care in Saudi Arabia.

Investigation Into the Flydubai Cockpit Incident

The investigation into the Flydubai cockpit incident remains ongoing. Israeli officials have alleged that the co-pilot stabbed Machchhar and tried to crash the aircraft. However, the motive and complete sequence of events have not been conclusively established by investigators. The UAE aviation authorities have described the episode as a security incident and said that an investigation is underway. Flydubai has also called for people to avoid premature speculation while authorities examine the circumstances. The distinction is important because the claims about the co-pilot's intentions are still part of the developing investigation rather than a final official finding.

What Happened to the Passengers?

The aircraft's 174 occupants were ultimately able to reach safety after the emergency landing in Tabuk. Once the aircraft was secured and the injured pilots received medical attention, arrangements were made for passengers to continue their journey. Reuters reported that the passengers later reached Tel Aviv safely. The incident has since attracted international attention because of the combination of a cockpit confrontation, a rapid loss of altitude, intervention by passengers and crew, and the eventual safe landing in Saudi Arabia.
