In a move towards a smarter, sustainable future, Dubai is set to enhance its transportation landscape after His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum reviewed the ambitious strategies and upcoming projects of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The emphasis is on improving road networks, public transport, and pioneering next-generation mobility initiatives.
During his visit to RTA’s Enterprise Command and Control Centre (EC³), the Sheikh witnessed the first-of-its-kind facility in the Middle East that consolidates all transport modes in one place. This sophisticated centre monitors traffic, emergencies, and incidents city-wide, overseeing over 28,000 vehicles daily and processing a staggering 4.4 billion mobility data entries. Equipped with more than 10,000 cameras and 34 integrated tech systems, it leverages AI and machine-learning for swift and precise operations, minimizing human errors.
Road and Public Transport Network Enhancements
The RTA's strategic outlook envisions Dubai as a leader in seamless mobility solutions. Currently, the emirate's road infrastructure covers over 25,000 lane-kilometres, featuring over 1,000 vehicle bridges and tunnels, complemented by 177 pedestrian crossings. The public transport system facilitates over two million rides daily through a 100-kilometre metro and tram system, alongside 1,380 buses, 13,900 taxis, 210 marine vessels, and other integrated services.
Notable upcoming developments include the Dubai Metro Blue Line, which will stretch 30 kilometres and comprise 14 stations. This line will interconnect with the Red and Green lines, linking vital residential, developmental, and industrial hubs projected to host one million residents by 2040, while reducing travel times to Dubai International Airport to merely 20 minutes.
Embracing Aerial and Autonomous Transportation
Dubai is also setting the stage for groundbreaking transportation methods. The aerial taxi program, developed with Joby Aviation and Skyports, has successfully completed test flights of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in Margham, affirming their suitability for local operations. Passenger services are anticipated to commence in 2026.
In addition, the RTA is piloting autonomous taxi services in partnership with global mobility firms, paving the way for commercial launch in early 2026—an important milestone in Dubai’s drive towards fully autonomous transport.
Dubai’s cohesive transport vision melds state-of-the-art technology with extensive infrastructure, promising a seamless, safe, and efficient travel experience for both residents and visitors.
