In Bengaluru, law enforcement has apprehended seven individuals following a brazen theft of ₹70 million (approximately $800,000) from an ATM cash transport van. This incident took place three days ago, with police swiftly resolving the case and retrieving ₹57.6 million of the pilfered cash.
Authorities revealed that the robbery involved perpetrators masquerading as officials from the Reserve Bank of India, halting the cash van in the Lalbagh region during daylight hours. They informed the crew that they needed to inspect paperwork concerning the substantial cash load, subsequently coercing the cash custodian and two security personnel into an SUV, while one of the assailants commandeered the cash van.
Additionally, investigators found that the criminals employed bogus vehicle registration plates and strategically chose locations with minimal or no CCTV surveillance to facilitate their operations. The gang even switched vehicles throughout the robbery to evade capture.
Among those detained are Gopal Prasad, a worker for the cash transport firm CMS, J Xavier, an ex-employee of CMS, and Annappa Naik, a local police officer. Authorities are currently in pursuit of two to three additional suspects tied to the case.
Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh stated that over 200 law enforcement officials collaborated across Karnataka and neighboring states including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Goa to apprehend the criminals.
Investigations into CMS, the cash transport enterprise, are also underway to assess any potential breaches in cash management protocols. Commissioner Singh emphasized the importance of varying the routes and schedules of cash vans to mitigate the likelihood of being targeted by criminals.
This incident underscores the urgent necessity for enhanced security protocols in cash transportation to thwart future audacious robberies. The police remain diligent in their efforts to identify all suspects involved.
