On November 18, 2025, schools and colleges across Puducherry and Karaikal were closed in response to forecasts of heavy rain within the Union Territory. Similarly, several districts in Tamil Nadu, such as Cuddalore and Villupuram, announced holidays for educational institutions after experiencing light to moderate rainfall on November 17, 2025. This precipitation is attributed to active weather systems over the Bay of Bengal and nearby Sri Lanka, which have ushered in the Northeast monsoon, ending a recent dry stretch.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has flagged a yellow alert for eight southern Tamil Nadu districts, including Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, and Theni, urging citizens to adopt precautionary steps. Meteorologists have noted that though the current low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal is not expected to gain much strength, a follow-up low-pressure system developing later this week could lead to sustained heavy rains across the state.
According to RMC officials, the heaviest rainfall is anticipated in Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts from November 19 to 20, with intensity forecasted to rise from November 22 as the additional low-pressure area approaches the southeast Bay of Bengal. Yellow alerts have been issued for coastal districts from November 21 to 23.
This recent wave of rain is forecasted to aid Tamil Nadu in achieving its seasonal rainfall goal, with rainfall currently 9% below the average of 29 cm recorded thus far. Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant, especially in low-lying and flood-prone regions, and to heed local administrative guidance to ensure safety.
The ongoing rainfall is likely to disrupt daily activities, transportation, and agriculture across southern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, as officials maintain close monitoring of weather conditions to provide timely updates and warnings.
