Travel Restrictions on US Citizen Saad Almadi Rescinded by Saudi Arabia

Travel Restrictions on US Citizen Saad Almadi Rescinded by Saudi Arabia

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Saudi Arabia has officially revoked the travel ban on Saad Ibrahim Almadi, a US citizen with Saudi roots, enabling him to return to the US, as confirmed by his family on Wednesday. Almadi was detained in 2021 while visiting Saudi Arabia for critiquing government corruption on social media and referencing the murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

He received a 16-year prison sentence in 2022 on charges that included threatening the stability of the kingdom; however, he was freed a year later after the Biden administration's advocacy. Despite his release, Saudi authorities continued to restrict his travel until now.

Almadi's family expressed both relief and gratitude, acknowledging the role of the US government in this development. They stated, “This outcome is thanks to the efforts of President Joe Biden and his administration.” They also voiced hopes that similar advocacy continues for other Americans detained overseas.

This decision coincides with a renewed dialogue between the US and Saudi Arabia. Recently, President Biden greeted Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the US, defending him amid questions regarding the Khashoggi incident.

During the visit, the Crown Prince, who committed to investing $1 trillion in the US, characterized Khashoggi’s death as “tragic” and a “major error.” The murder, involving a US resident and Washington Post journalist, led to a significant backlash and tensions in US-Saudi relations.

Saad Almadi’s experience underscores persistent issues surrounding freedom of speech and human rights within Saudi Arabia. The recent lifting of his travel ban enables him to reunite with family in the US and signifies a rare success of US diplomatic influence in securing the release of its citizens from Saudi detention.
