Santhakumari, the beloved mother of Malayalam cinema icon Mohanlal, passed away peacefully on Tuesday at the family residence in Elamakkara, Kochi. She was 90 years old. Her death marks the end of a remarkable life that spanned nine decades, filled with love, resilience, and quiet strength.
Originally from Elanthoor in Pathanamthitta district, Santhakumari spent much of her life in Thiruvananthapuram, having moved there many years ago following her husband Viswanathan Nair’s professional commitments. Viswanathan Nair served the Kerala government with distinction as the law secretary, a position he held until his demise. The family’s move to Thiruvananthapuram was closely tied to his career.
Santhakumari was a pillar of strength for her family, quietly supporting them through various phases of life. In recent years, after suffering a stroke, she was brought to Kochi by Mohanlal to stay with him and his family, ensuring she received the care and companionship she deserved. The warmth of her family surrounded her as she celebrated her 90th birthday in August 2025, marking a significant milestone in her long life.
Mohanlal, who has often spoken with deep affection about the bond he shared with his mother, described her as a source of inspiration and support throughout his life. Her loving nature and resilience particularly shone during challenging times, especially when she stood steadfastly by her husband after he lost his memory. She gently cared for him, accompanying him to public functions and providing him with tender support.
Mohanlal has credited his mother’s example with shaping his values, especially the lessons of compassion, kindness, and the importance of pursuing meaningful and genuine relationships. He has remarked that much of what he learned about helping others and sustaining friendships came from observing his mother’s patient and selfless care for his father.
Santhakumari is survived by her superstar son Mohanlal, who remains one of the most respected and loved actors in Indian cinema. The family also remembers Mohanlal’s elder brother Pyarelal, who passed away in 2000.
Her passing comes shortly after the release of Mohanlal’s latest film Vrusshabha on December 25, 2025. The family and fans alike mourn the loss of a gentle and strong soul who played an integral role in shaping the life and career of one of Malayalam cinema’s greatest legends.
The news of her demise has brought a wave of condolences from fans, colleagues, and the film fraternity, who remember her not just as the mother of a superstar but as a remarkable woman in her own right. As Mohanlal and his family grieve their loss, they also celebrate the enduring legacy of love and values she has left behind.
