In a significant advancement in defense cooperation, Russia has presented a substantial offer to India prior to President Vladimir Putin’s anticipated visit to New Delhi in December for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. This marks Putin’s first visit to India since December 2021 and could set a pivotal precedent in the longstanding military relations between both nations.
Complete Access to Su-57 Technology
Russian military officials have stated that Moscow is prepared to grant India full access to the technology associated with the Su-57, a cutting-edge stealth fighter jet. This encompasses various aspects including engines, sensors, stealth materials, control systems, and essential components necessary for crafting and manufacturing advanced aerial combat vehicles.
Initially, aircraft will be supplied from Russia, transitioning to incremental production in India. This approach aims to empower India to learn and ultimately create its own advanced fighter jets, a unique offer from any other nation.
In addition, Russia has indicated its readiness to improve India’s access to production rights, collaborative learning opportunities, and further integration of Indian-made armaments into these aircraft.
Possibility of Su-75 Checkmate Inclusion
Speculations suggest that Russia might further extend its offer by introducing the new single-engine stealth fighter, the Su-75 Checkmate, to India. This aircraft is set to cater to the light and medium combat aircraft segment, with potential manufacturing in India if a mutually beneficial agreement is established.
Experts in defense contend that local production of the Su-75 could fulfill India’s future aerial defense requirements more affordably while generating significant export potential, akin to the successful BrahMos missile endeavor.
Rather than competing with India’s twin-engine AMCA initiative, the Su-75 is expected to complement it, enhancing the Air Force's capabilities across different dimensions.
Motives Behind Russia's Offer
Russian representatives affirm that India has been a reliable ally for many years. Throughout various challenges, including international restrictions and military pressures faced by India, Russia has remained committed, supplying essential defense technologies and support. Moscow aims to further this collaboration by assisting India in cultivating its ability to produce advanced fighter jets autonomously.
Moreover, any technological requests from New Delhi will be duly considered, encompassing modern radar systems, artificial intelligence technologies, stealth coatings, and advanced air combat armaments.
Preparations for Putin’s Upcoming Visit
President Vladimir Putin’s forthcoming visit is poised to unveil significant initiatives in defense collaboration. Diplomacy efforts are already under way, illustrated by a recent meeting between Nikolai Patrushev, a senior Russian security official, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to discuss strengthening cooperation, predominantly in maritime strategy and defense.
This discussion also revisited the preparations for the approaching summit slated for early December, which is expected to underline the evolving dynamics of the India-Russia partnership, focusing on modernizing defense production, enhancing collaborative efforts, and adapting to new security challenges in the region.
