Apple has taken down two of the most popular gay dating apps in China, Blued and Finka, from its domestic app store, following orders from the Cyberspace Administration of China. This decision aligns with Beijing's ongoing campaign to regulate digital content, impacting millions who depended on these services for connection and companionship.
While Blued's “lite” variant remains available on select Chinese app stores, other dating platforms like Jicco and Jack’d continue their operations in the nation. Alone, Blued has garnered tens of millions of downloads, solidifying its role within China’s LGBT scene.
The decision has ignited anxiety among users. One community member stated, “I hope those heterosexual policymakers can grasp that love is unique—it’s not something to be ashamed of or silenced.” This expresses broader fears regarding the visibility and rights of LGBTQ+ individuals in China, where advocacy efforts face escalating challenges.
China’s stringent internet policies have historically limited foreign applications. Notable platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp remain inaccessible, and Google Play is similarly blocked, pushing Android users to rely on domestically modified systems. Previously, in 2022, Grindr, a U.S.-based gay dating app, was also removed from Apple's China store in the context of governmental actions against content classified as “illegal and inappropriate.”
The Cyberspace Administration of China defends these actions by emphasizing the necessity to “foster the standardized and healthy development of the internet industry.” While homosexuality was decriminalized in China back in 1997, same-sex marriage is still not recognized, and advocacy faces rising difficulties.
As the digital environment tightens further, members of China’s LGBT community are left to navigate dwindling online spaces to connect, underscoring the ongoing conflict between technology, legislation, and individual freedoms.
