Unearthed: A Forgotten Radio Play by Tennessee Williams

Unearthed: A Forgotten Radio Play by Tennessee Williams

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Decades ago, audiences listened intently to the thrilling narratives spun over the radio, and now, a forgotten gem by Tennessee Williams has come to light. This radio play, titled “The Strangers,” was written during his time at the University of Iowa and showcases the early brilliance of one of America's foremost playwrights.

Published in The Strand Magazine, the play illustrates Williams’ explorations into isolation, fear, and an ambiguous reality, themes prevalent in his later works. The magazine is known for resurrecting lesser-known pieces from distinguished authors like Hemingway and Steinbeck.

Set in a grand New England home, “The Strangers” invites listeners into an atmospheric world filled with stormy backdrops and spectral presences. The narrative follows Mr. and Mrs. Brighton, who are haunted by mysterious entities that exist beyond the human eye. Williams’ early lines delve into the fragile nature of human perception: “We members of the human species are equipped with only five senses. Or six at the very most… what we know of them is very, very slight.”

Williams’ intrigue with horror was shaped not only by the popular culture of his time but also by personal experiences, particularly regarding the mental health challenges faced by his sister Rose. This struggle would ultimately influence the depth of his characters, as seen in iconic works like The Glass Menagerie.

What started as a creative endeavor allowed Williams to enhance his narrative style and dramatic flair, laying groundwork for the notable works that would follow. “The Strangers” provides an intimate look into the budding years of a playwright whose insights into human emotion and madness remain impactful today.
