An air ambulance flying from Ranchi to New Delhi crashed near Simaria in Jharkhand’s Chatra district on Monday night, killing all seven people on board. Aviation authorities said initial findings suggest adverse weather conditions, including a thunderstorm, may have led to the crash. A detailed investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the aircraft—a Beechcraft C90 bearing registration VT-AJV—was operated by Redbird Airways Pvt Ltd. After establishing contact with air traffic control in Kolkata, the crew requested a deviation due to bad weather. Shortly afterward, at around 7:34 pm, the aircraft lost both communication and radar contact.
The flight had departed from Birsa Munda Airport at 7:11 pm and was en route to New Delhi carrying a critically injured patient along with medical staff and attendants. Officials said the aircraft went down near Simaria amid reports of intense weather activity in the region.
Local authorities indicated that a thunderstorm was likely responsible for the crash. The airport director in Ranchi said inclement weather could have played a major role, but emphasized that conclusions would only be confirmed after a full technical probe by aviation experts.
The deceased include two pilots, a doctor, a paramedic, the patient, and two family members accompanying the patient. All bodies were recovered from the crash site and taken to Sadar Hospital in Chatra for post-mortem examinations. The incident marks another tragic reminder of the risks posed by extreme weather to aviation operations, especially during medical evacuation flights.
