In a significant political shift, Raghav Chadha has decided to leave the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and officially join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with six fellow MPs. This development poses a critical challenge for AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, particularly given the substantial loss in Rajya Sabha representation.
At a recent press briefing, Chadha disclosed that nearly two-thirds of AAP's Rajya Sabha membership has opted for the BJP, including notable figures like Harbhajan Singh, Swati Maliwal, and Rajinder Gupta. He also announced that the necessary paperwork has been submitted to the Rajya Sabha Chairman, ensuring the legality of the merger under parliamentary guidelines.
This transition adheres to India's anti-defection laws, which permit a merger if it’s supported by a supermajority of legislators from a party. Consequently, the MPs involved remain shielded from disqualification despite their party switch.
Chadha explained that his discontent with AAP stemmed from the party's drift from its foundational anti-corruption values. He emphasized his 15 years of service to the party but expressed that it has become "compromised and corrupt," making his departure essential for his commitment to integrity in politics.
This political maneuver follows recent friction between Chadha and AAP's leadership, with his removal as deputy leader fueling the discord. AAP has criticized him for failing to align with party strategies in Parliament, allegations Chadha firmly rejected.
In response, AAP representatives condemned Chadha's decision as a betrayal. Senior leader Sanjay Singh remarked that the party provided him with opportunities, only to have him join ranks with BJP. Kejriwal also accused BJP of "betraying the citizens of Punjab".
Following this departure, AAP's representation in Rajya Sabha is reduced to just three members—Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, Sanjay Singh, and ND Gupta—further diminishing their influence nationally, especially with upcoming elections looming.
Speculation arises that Chadha may receive a prominent position within the central government post his joining with BJP, which could potentially include a ministerial role, though no official statements have corroborated this yet.
This merger underscores the evolving political dynamics in India as party conflicts and strategic alliances continue to alter the landscape of national politics.
