Qatar Shura Council Engages at Istanbul IPU Assembly

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Qatar's Shura Council is taking an active role in the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the 217th Governing Council session in Istanbul, Türkiye. The delegation, headed by HE Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim, kicked off the five-day event on Wednesday.

Under the theme “Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations,” this year’s assembly addresses the pressing need for global cooperation in tackling various international challenges.

The backdrop to this year's discussions includes significant geopolitical shifts, necessitating robust parliamentary interventions. Topics on the agenda encompass international peace, the establishment of a just global economy, and the enhancement of parliamentary roles in governance post-conflict.

Critical areas such as social justice, inclusive development, and the advancement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are also being prioritized. Special attention is dedicated to social inclusion and the empowerment of individuals with disabilities, which align with global development objectives.

On the sidelines, HE Speaker Al Ghanim was involved in both the Gulf parliamentary meeting and the Arab parliamentary coordination meeting in Istanbul on Tuesday. These gatherings concentrated on improving coordination between Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) legislative entities and aligning stances on pivotal IPU topics.

The Arab coordination meeting discussed crucial issues, such as nominating the IPU Secretary-General, filling committee vacancies, and potential emergency agenda items, while striving to unify Arab viewpoints on diverse parliamentary matters.

Additionally, HE Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti, Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council and an IPU Executive Committee member, provided a thorough overview of the committee's progress since the last General Assembly during the Arab group meeting, emphasizing efforts to enhance parliamentary collaboration.

The involvement of Qatar's Shura Council highlights its dedication to international discourse, collaboration, and the promotion of peace and sustainable development through diplomatic channels.
