Qatar Charity Supports 14,000 People with Food Aid in Chad Crisis

Qatar Charity Supports 14,000 People with Food Aid in Chad Crisis

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In response to the escalating food insecurity in Chad, Qatar Charity (QC) has provided essential food support to vulnerable families through the distribution of integrated food baskets.

This initiative specifically targeted households in needy regions around N'Djamena, benefiting approximately 14,000 individuals with the provision of 2,000 comprehensive food baskets.

Carried out at four strategic sites on the city's outskirts, each location received 500 food baskets, ensuring a balanced outreach to families in varying circumstances. The contents of these baskets were carefully selected to sustain household needs for several weeks.

Collaborating closely with the Ministry of Social Action, Solidarity and Humanitarian Affairs, Qatar Charity organized this effort through its Department of Social Solidarity and field teams, which facilitated efficient targeting of beneficiaries and distribution logistics.

This aid arrives at a critical moment as food insecurity levels in Chad continue to climb. The country, one of the Sahel region's most affected by numerous crises, has millions grappling with food shortages, as highlighted by the World Food Programme (WFP).

Chad's 2025 Global Hunger Index categorizes hunger as 'serious.' Additionally, the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) estimates between 1.5 to 2 million people may require emergency assistance during the lean season from June to September when food reserves diminish and prices surge.

Contributing factors to this crisis include persistent droughts, flooding, reduced agricultural output, high poverty, as well as displacement and refugee movement's impact.

Health statistics are equally alarming, with over 30% of children under five facing stunting due to chronic malnutrition, underscoring ongoing structural issues that extend beyond immediate needs.

Through this critical intervention, Qatar Charity seeks to alleviate the plight of the most affected families, working to mitigate the harsh consequences of the food crisis in Chad.
