Qatar Urges Peaceful Negotiations, Cautions on Hormuz Strait

Qatar Urges Peaceful Negotiations, Cautions on Hormuz Strait

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Amid escalating regional tensions, Qatar has reasserted its dedication to diplomacy and peaceful negotiations. Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, the Advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, revealed that Qatar maintains ongoing dialogue with pivotal global partners, notably the United States, to keep abreast of developments and bolster efforts aimed at crisis resolution.

During a weekly media briefing, Al Ansari underscored Qatar's backing for Pakistan’s mediation initiatives. He stated that premature judgments regarding the success or failure of ongoing discussions are unwarranted, given the robust international support for dialogue and the optimism surrounding potential resolutions. Qatar is closely coordinating with Pakistan, which is in active outreach to all involved parties.

Al Ansari pointed out that Gulf states are engaged in nearly daily discussions with relevant stakeholders, recognizing the immediate implications of the crisis on regional stability. He emphasized that longstanding cooperation among regional partners is vital for navigating rising tensions.

Addressing the critical issue of the Strait of Hormuz, Al Ansari warned that any disturbance or closure could escalate regional disputes into a worldwide disaster. He highlighted the importance of the strait for energy supplies, trade, and global logistics, explaining that any disruption would have extensive repercussions on essential services and daily life worldwide.

He reiterated that ensuring the Strait of Hormuz remains open is a collective international obligation. Qatar remains a dependable global energy supplier, actively collaborating with international partners to safeguard maritime security and stabilize the market.

On matters of defense and international relations, Al Ansari articulated Qatar’s efforts to fortify its alliances, positioning these as part of a broader strategy to diversify global connections. He noted strong relations with Pakistan across various fields of cooperation.

Concerning Syria, Qatar reiterated its unwavering support for the Syrian populace and its commitment to fostering stability and developmental progress in the region. Bilateral relations between Qatar and Syria continue to advance on both political and economic aspects.

Al Ansari also confirmed ongoing dialogue with Iran, sharing details of a recent conversation between Qatar’s Prime Minister and Iran’s Foreign Minister, during which Qatar urged Iran to cease regional aggression and prioritize peaceful solutions. He reiterated Qatar’s ongoing support for mediation efforts and existing negotiations.

On security matters, he praised the Qatari Armed Forces for their protective role during current tensions and reaffirmed support for international initiatives aimed at maintaining ceasefires and securing long-term solutions. However, he cautioned against predicting the future of ceasefires, stating that this depends on the convergence of all parties’ commitments.

Turning to Lebanon, Al Ansari voiced Qatar’s steadfast support for the nation’s unity and sovereignty, condemning recent violations that resulted in casualties and displacement. He welcomed the ceasefire as a constructive move towards de-escalating tensions, advocating for strict adherence to it and a vigilant international stance against violations.

Finally, Al Ansari emphasized the necessity of resolving all regional conflicts through dialogue, warning that further escalation could adversely impact the global economy, particularly in the oil and gas sectors. Qatar remains supportive of extended ceasefires as required to facilitate negotiations and prevent additional instability.

Qatar stands steadfast in advocating for diplomacy as the sole viable route to achieve lasting peace and regional stability.
