India’s badminton ace and two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu continued her impressive run at the BWF Super 1000 Malaysia Open, booking a place in the semi-finals of the prestigious tournament being held in Kuala Lumpur.
Sindhu’s quarter-final encounter against Japan’s third-seeded Akane Yamaguchi ended prematurely after the Indian shuttler completely dominated the opening game. Sindhu raced to a commanding 21-11 win in just 11 minutes, displaying sharp attacking play and excellent court control. However, Yamaguchi was forced to withdraw from the match due to a knee injury, retiring hurt and handing Sindhu a direct entry into the semi-finals.
Earlier in the tournament, Sindhu produced another confident performance in the Round of 16. She brushed aside Japan’s eighth seed Tomoka Miyazaki in straight games, winning 21-8, 21-13 in a swift 33-minute match. Sindhu’s aggressive strokes, solid defense, and consistency proved too strong for her opponent, underlining her strong form in the tournament.
In the men’s doubles event, India’s top-ranked duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also progressed further by securing a spot in the quarter-finals. The pair delivered a controlled and dominant performance against Malaysia’s Junaidi Arif and Roy King Yap, winning the match 21-18, 21-11 in 39 minutes. The Indian combination maintained pressure throughout the contest and showcased their experience at the top level. They are now set to face Indonesia’s sixth-seeded pair Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto in the quarter-finals, a clash expected to be highly competitive.
India’s campaign in the men’s singles category, however, came to an end in the pre-quarterfinals. Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen suffered a hard-fought defeat against Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu, losing 20-22, 15-21 after a closely contested battle.
Young Indian shuttler Ayush Shetty also exited the tournament after putting up a spirited performance against world number one and top seed Shi Yu Qi. Ayush won the second game to level the match but eventually went down 18-21, 21-18, 12-21, earning praise for his resilience and fighting spirit against the tournament favorite.
With PV Sindhu marching into the semi-finals and Satwik-Chirag still in contention, India remains hopeful of a strong finish at the Malaysia Open as the tournament heads into its decisive stages.
