Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in China for a high-profile visit aimed at strengthening Moscow’s strategic partnership with Beijing amid growing global geopolitical tensions.
The two-day visit comes just days after former US President Donald Trump completed his own diplomatic trip to China, making the latest meeting between Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping closely watched by world leaders and analysts.
According to the Kremlin, both leaders are expected to discuss economic cooperation, regional security issues, energy partnerships, and broader international developments. The visit also marks the 25th anniversary of the Sino-Russian Treaty of Friendship signed in 2001.
Before departing for China, Putin described relations between Russia and China as being at an “unprecedented level” and said cooperation between the two countries plays a major role in maintaining global stability. Chinese state media also highlighted the importance of the partnership.
Chinese officials are attempting to balance strong ties with Russia while also maintaining stable relations with the United States following recent talks between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump in Beijing. Analysts believe China wants to avoid deeper tensions with the West while continuing strategic coordination with Moscow.
Trade and energy cooperation remain central to the Russia-China relationship. China has become Russia’s biggest trading partner and one of the largest buyers of Russian oil and natural gas, especially after Western sanctions were imposed on Moscow following the Ukraine conflict.
Russian officials said energy exports to China increased significantly during the first quarter of 2026. Moscow also views Beijing as a reliable economic partner during ongoing instability in global energy markets and Middle East tensions.
During the visit, Putin and Xi are also expected to discuss developments related to Iran, the Ukraine war, global energy security, and future economic projects between the two nations. Both countries continue to present themselves as supporters of a multipolar world order.
Experts believe the meeting is designed to reassure Russia-China strategic trust while China simultaneously keeps diplomatic communication open with the United States and other global powers.
