Paris Saint-Germain produced a stunning comeback to defeat Monaco in the first leg of their Champions League knockout phase play-off tie at the Stade Louis II. Substitute Desire Doue was the standout performer, scoring twice to help the defending champions recover from a two-goal deficit and secure a crucial away victory.
Monaco made a dream start as Folarin Balogun scored inside the opening minute, heading in from close range. The hosts doubled their lead in the 18th minute when Balogun raced through on goal and calmly slotted past the goalkeeper for his 10th goal of the season. PSG were given a chance to respond from the penalty spot after Wout Faes fouled Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, but Vitinha’s effort was saved.
Manager Luis Enrique introduced Doue midway through the first half, and the 20-year-old made an immediate impact. He pulled one back in the 29th minute with a powerful strike from a tight angle. Just before half-time, his long-range effort led to Achraf Hakimi scoring the equaliser with a half-volley, bringing PSG level before the break.
Monaco’s situation worsened early in the second half when Aleksandr Golovin was sent off after a reckless challenge. PSG took advantage of the extra man, and in the 67th minute Warren Zaire-Emery set up Doue to score the winner. The return leg will take place in Paris on February 25, with PSG now holding a valuable advantage.
