Polish airports in Radom and Lublin have resumed civilian operations Thursday morning after temporary closures allowed military aircraft to operate freely, the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency confirmed. The airports, located in central and eastern Poland, are less frequently used by passengers but play a strategic role during security alerts.
Earlier in the day, Poland scrambled fighter jets and put its air defence systems on high alert in response to Russian missile and drone strikes targeting Ukraine. The Operational Command closely monitored the situation, ensuring Polish airspace near the border remained secure and free from violations.
NATO allies joined the operation, with Norway, Spain, and Turkey assisting in air patrols, while German forces contributed through a Patriot missile system. These coordinated efforts aimed to secure Polish skies and prevent any potential spillover from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
By 10:30 a.m., authorities reported that military operations in Polish airspace had concluded. Ground-based radar and air defence systems returned to normal operations, confirming that no violations of Polish airspace occurred during the heightened alert.
Local officials emphasized that while Radom and Lublin airports are not major international hubs, the swift coordination between Polish and allied forces demonstrated NATO’s readiness to respond to regional security threats. Passengers were advised to check flight schedules, as the brief closures caused minor disruptions.
Poland’s response comes amid escalating Russian attacks on Ukraine, highlighting the continued tensions in Eastern Europe. The temporary closure of airports and the activation of air defence systems underscore the seriousness with which Warsaw and its NATO allies are treating potential threats to national and regional security.
This coordinated military and civilian response marks another instance of Poland and NATO maintaining vigilance as Russian aggression continues to impact the region, reassuring citizens and travelers alike of their safety and preparedness.
