Pakistan International Airlines, the country's flag carrier, is set to transition to private management starting April next year, as confirmed by a senior government official. This significant step is part of Pakistan's prolonged ambition to privatise the ailing airline and restore its fiscal health.
The move follows a successful bidding process where a consortium led by Arif Habib Corporation acquired a 75% stake in PIA with a winning offer of 135 billion Pakistani rupees, surpassing the government's reserve price of 100 billion rupees. The auction was broadcast live on television, highlighting the sale's significance.
Muhammad Ali, an adviser to the Prime Minister on privatisation, stated that the government anticipates a transfer of ownership to the new management by April, contingent on timely approvals. The process now awaits consent from the Privatisation Commission board and federal cabinet, which is expected to happen shortly. The signing of the contract is likely to take place within two weeks, followed by a 90-day timeframe for fulfilling legal and regulatory obligations.
As part of the agreement, the government will obtain approximately 10 billion rupees in cash immediately and retain a 25% ownership stake in the airline, valued at about 45 billion rupees. This arrangement allows the state to maintain some involvement while relinquishing operational control.
This privatisation initiative aims to inject new capital into PIA rather than merely shifting ownership. Officials assert that the objective is to revamp the airline, enhance services, and mitigate the risks of recurring financial troubles. The new management is expected to invest in improving operations, management efficiency, and fleet upgrades.
PIA has been plagued by substantial losses, significant debt, and numerous operational hurdles, leading to the failure of previous privatisation attempts. This latest arrangement is viewed as a pivotal moment in efforts to revive the airline and lessen the government's financial strain.
If everything proceeds as planned, this transition will initiate a new era for Pakistan International Airlines under private stewardship, with hopes for greater efficiency, enhanced customer service, and sustainable operations.
