An official inquiry into last year’s election unrest in Tanzania has revealed that at least 518 people lost their lives during the violence. The findings were presented by a government-appointed commission, shedding light on one of the country’s most serious political crises in recent years.
The commission, led by Mohamed Chande Othman, stated that the actual number of deaths could be higher. Some families reportedly buried their loved ones without taking them to hospitals or morgues, making it difficult to confirm exact figures.
The violence took place on October 29, following protests by young people who accused the government of restricting opposition activities. The situation was further intensified as opposition leaders faced legal challenges, and one major candidate was barred from contesting the election.
Thousands of people were injured during the unrest, with more than 800 suffering gunshot wounds. The report also highlighted that 245 individuals are still missing, while some families claimed that bodies seen in morgues later disappeared.
The commission ruled out the existence of mass graves, despite claims from human rights groups. However, it confirmed that the protests were not peaceful and involved organized acts of violence that occurred in multiple locations at the same time.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan responded by promising reforms based on the findings. She announced plans to form a reconciliation commission and a criminal investigation body to identify those responsible for violence, funding, and planning.
The government also plans to review the use of firearms during the unrest and investigate reports of missing bodies and alleged abductions. The findings are expected to influence future constitutional changes and strengthen efforts to prevent similar incidents.
