A temple in Penang has confirmed the full cancellation of its planned Aidilfitri open house, firmly denying claims that a replacement “unity banquet” would take place. The clarification comes amid confusion following statements by local authorities about a possible alternative event.
Thean Hock Keong stated that no programme of any kind is scheduled for April 11, stressing that all related activities have been completely called off. The temple emphasized that reports suggesting another organisation would step in as the organiser were inaccurate.
The temple also distanced itself from any separate gathering reportedly planned at Dewan Panorama in Bagan Ajam. It said that such claims had contributed to public confusion and clarified that it is not involved in any event linked to that location or date.
The issue arose after Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mohamad Abdul Hamid mentioned that a “Majlis Jamuan Perpaduan” or unity banquet could still proceed under a different organiser. However, the temple rejected this claim, reiterating that no event associated with it would be held.
The cancellation follows directives from the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department, which had barred the temple from hosting an Aidilfitri open house. Authorities stated that such celebrations fall under Islamic religious activities and require approval from the relevant religious council.
In response, the temple said it chose to comply with the directive to avoid misunderstandings and sensitivities. It maintained that its original intention was to promote unity and strengthen community ties, with plans to serve halal food prepared by local vendors.
While expressing disappointment, the temple urged both authorities and public figures to avoid issuing conflicting or unclear statements. It stressed that clear communication is essential to prevent confusion and reaffirmed that its goal has always been to foster harmony among communities.
