Paul Costelloe, a pivotal figure in Irish fashion and known for his role as the personal designer for Princess Diana, has peacefully passed away in London at the age of 80. His family announced the sad news on Saturday, noting that he was surrounded by his beloved wife and seven children after a brief illness.
Hailing from Dublin, Costelloe grew up with strong ties to the raincoat industry, which fueled his passion for fashion. He furthered his studies at the Grafton Academy of Fashion Design, eventually sharpening his craft at the esteemed Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris.
In 1979, he debuted his label, the Paul Costelloe Collections, showcasing his talent at renowned fashion events like London Fashion Week, Paris, Milan, and New York. His designs masterfully combined contemporary elegance with traditional Irish fabrics such as linen and tweed, honoring his Irish roots.
A standout moment in his career came in 1983, when he became the personal designer for Diana, Princess of Wales. Their collaboration resulted in numerous unforgettable outfits that truly defined her sophisticated style until her passing in 1997.
Costelloe's influence transcended high fashion; he collaborated with mainstream retailers like Dunnes Stores and was honored as the closing designer for Ireland Fashion Week in October 2025, a testament to his ongoing legacy in the fashion industry.
Despite facing backlash in 1998 for remarks about Irish women's fashion, Costelloe later acknowledged the positive evolution of style in Ireland, recognizing its European influences.
Irish leaders have expressed their grief at his loss. Taoiseach Micheál Martin described him as "an icon of design" who elevated the global standing of Irish fashion. Tánaiste Simon Harris praised his remarkable talent, discipline, and commitment to quality, asserting that his influence will resonate in Irish fashion for years to come.
Paul Costelloe's legacy endures as a remarkable designer who placed Irish fashion firmly on the world map, leaving behind a collection of timeless styles that continue to inspire. His contributions will be cherished by the fashion world and beyond.
