The United Nations Security Council has officially ratified a resolution endorsing U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed strategy to resolve the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin described this development as a “necessary first step” toward achieving lasting peace.
Passed on Monday, the resolution advocates for the deployment of a multinational security force in Gaza, aimed at maintaining stability and preventing any resurgence of hostilities. Additionally, it invites member states to take part in a newly established Board of Peace, tasked with overseeing the extensive reconstruction and economic recovery of Gaza, which has endured significant devastation due to prolonged conflict.
From his base in Ramallah, Shahin underscored the significance of the resolution while noting it represents only the inception of a protracted journey toward peace. “This resolution is essential for the people of Gaza. It lays the groundwork for security, governance, and reconstruction. However, its success hinges on the commitment from the international community and all involved parties,” he stated.
The U.S.-drafted plan at the heart of the resolution outlines a blueprint for the demilitarisation of conflict zones, enabling humanitarian aid distribution and phased reconstruction initiatives. It also proposes a governance framework to guarantee civilian oversight over recovery efforts, aiming to restore vital infrastructure, healthcare, and educational services across Gaza.
Diplomatic observers highlight that while the resolution enjoys considerable international backing, challenges to on-the-ground compliance persist. The plan doesn’t directly resolve deeper political disputes between Israel and Palestinian authorities, potentially hindering implementation. Nonetheless, supporters believe that establishing a multinational security force and the Board of Peace creates a structured approach for monitoring and ensuring adherence.
Shahin reiterated the necessity of global collaboration, stating, “The adoption of this resolution is certainly a step forward, but true peace requires all member states to engage actively, ensuring security, reconstruction, and economic recovery. This is an opportunity for the world to support Gaza in rising from devastation and establishing a sustainable future.”
The resolution has sparked a measured optimism among humanitarian organizations, which emphasize the dire consequences of the conflict on Gaza’s civilian population. Years of sporadic warfare have ravaged the territory’s infrastructure, leading to high unemployment and widespread displacement. Experts assert that coordinated international support, as envisioned in the plan, is vital to avert further humanitarian crises and stabilize the region.
With the Security Council’s endorsement, the Trump-backed peace plan now transitions into the implementation phase. International stakeholders must work closely with local authorities in Gaza, Israel, and neighboring countries to ensure the plan translates into tangible improvements for civilians and long-term regional stability.
This resolution marks a diplomatic breakthrough in a conflict that has resulted in thousands of casualties, the displacement of millions, and the destabilization of the broader Middle East. While substantial challenges lie ahead, the Security Council’s actions inject a sense of hope that structured international intervention could finally pave the way for peace, security, and recovery in Gaza.
