The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has called on the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to lead an independent investigation into a deadly shooting in Puerto Princesa that resulted in the deaths of a corrections officer and two police personnel. The incident, which occurred on Good Friday, has raised serious concerns over police conduct and operational procedures.
BuCor Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. emphasized the need for an impartial probe, especially since police officers were directly involved. Initial findings suggest that the victim, a corrections officer, was forcibly taken from his home by individuals identified as police officers before gunshots were heard shortly after.
According to the Philippine National Police, four officers have been disarmed and detained for responding to the incident without proper authorization. Authorities stated that the officers may face serious charges, including homicide or murder, depending on the outcome of the investigation.
Officials also pointed to major lapses in discipline, including reports of officers being in civilian clothes and allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Both BuCor and the police have launched separate investigations, with assurances that there will be no cover-up and that all those responsible will be held accountable. The victim’s family has been placed under protective custody as the case continues to unfold.
