In response to the anticipated resumption of talks between the United States and Iran, Pakistan has ramped up security protocols in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. While official confirmations of the discussions remain undisclosed, preparations have been initiated to ensure the safety of any foreign delegations that may visit.
As part of the security enhancement, over 10,000 police officers have been deployed in Rawalpindi, with upwards of 600 checkpoints established at vital points. Islamabad is seeing similar precautionary measures, revealing the heightened state of alert surrounding these potential diplomatic activities. Notably, security has been intensified around sensitive sites like Nur Khan Airbase and Islamabad International Airport, both of which will be closed from midnight as a precautionary step.
This increase in security follows earlier US-Iran discussions held in Pakistan on April 11 and 12, which concluded without a conclusive agreement. Since those discussions, Pakistan has been actively pursuing diplomatic avenues to facilitate a new round of meetings aimed at reconciling differences between Washington and Tehran. Additionally, these efforts align with recent regional dialogues initiated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military leaders to forge consensus on vital matters.
Authorities have enforced strict regulations in certain areas of Rawalpindi; the activities such as drone flying and pigeon flying, along with aerial firing, are outright prohibited. Businesses including eateries, markets, parks, and fitness centers in designated zones have also been ordered to remain closed until further notice to ensure secured pathways for any visiting officials.
A red alert has been announced in key areas, with officers positioned on building rooftops and along critical routes. Access to structures overlooking these paths has been restricted, and property owners are urged to adhere to stringent security protocols. Hotels and lodgings are required to maintain thorough guest logs and submit daily reports to law enforcement.
Despite the comprehensive security measures, officials emphasize that no definitive decision has been reached regarding the schedule for the negotiations. Any claims that talks are imminent have been refuted by officials. The necessary ceasefire between the US and Iran, set to expire on April 22, has added urgency to these diplomatic undertakings.
As events unfold, Pakistan is establishing itself as a pivotal location for dialogue, while ensuring a high level of security readiness. Analysts observe that the upcoming days are critical in deciding the likelihood of the talks and their potential to alleviate increasing tensions in the area.
