Pakistan hospital fire kills 14 infants in Islamabad

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

A devastating Pakistan hospital fire broke out at a public hospital in Islamabad on Wednesday, killing 14 infants and prompting authorities to order an investigation into the tragedy. The fire erupted on the third floor of the Mother and Child Health Ward at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), one of the capital's major public medical facilities.

Fire Breaks Out in Maternity Ward

According to authorities, an emergency call was received shortly before 7am. Rescue teams and police personnel reached the hospital soon after the alarm was raised and managed to bring the blaze under control. The authorities confirmed that all 14 victims were infants. The tragic incident has caused widespread grief, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressing deep sorrow over the deaths.

Investigation Ordered Into Deadly Blaze

The exact cause of the Islamabad hospital fire has not yet been established. Prime Minister Sharif called for a detailed investigation, saying the circumstances surrounding the incident must be thoroughly examined. Officials are expected to determine how the fire started, how quickly it spread and whether existing hospital fire safety measures were adequate.

Pakistan Faces Recurring Fire Safety Concerns

The tragedy has renewed concerns over fire safety standards in Pakistan. Fires in large buildings have repeatedly resulted in significant loss of life, with safety regulations, building standards and enforcement often coming under scrutiny. Previous deadly incidents have included fires at commercial buildings, factories and shopping centres, highlighting persistent concerns about emergency exits, evacuation systems and fire prevention measures.

Grief Outside the Hospital

Following the incident, emotional scenes were witnessed outside the medical facility. Families and relatives gathered at the hospital as security personnel maintained a presence around the affected ward. The deaths of newborn children have added to the shock surrounding the incident and intensified calls for accountability and stronger safety measures in healthcare facilities.
