Pakistan’s Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has successfully apprehended 13 militants, predominantly associated with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), during a series of intelligence-led operations throughout Punjab province. Officials indicated that these arrests were pivotal in averting a potential terror attack aimed at law enforcement offices and other significant locations within the region.
According to CTD representatives, operations unfolded across several cities over the last week as authorities acted on intelligence reports concerning suspicious militant behavior. Security teams executed approximately 58 distinct raids in various areas, managing to detain the suspects. The captured individuals were reportedly affiliated with extremist factions, chiefly the TTP, which has perpetrated numerous deadly assaults in Pakistan in previous years.
One of the primary suspects, identified as Mukhtar Ahmad, was taken into custody in Lahore. Authorities characterized him as a threatening TTP member allegedly in possession of a substantial amount of explosive materials. Throughout the operations, security teams recovered explosives, detonators, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), illegal literature, mobile phones, and other items believed to be associated with terror-related planning.
The CTD reported that the militants were orchestrating attacks against security installations and government buildings in Punjab. Authorities urged that the prompt nature of these operations thwarted what could have escalated into a significant terror incident. Individual cases have been registered against all 13 detainees, with further inquiries underway to uncover additional members and collaborators within the network.
In recent years, Pakistan has witnessed a surge in militant violence, particularly in regions adjacent to the Afghan border. The TTP, known as the Pakistani Taliban, has amplified its attacks against security forces and public spaces since the Taliban reclaimed power in Afghanistan in 2021. Pakistani officials have consistently asserted that militant groups are striving to boost their activities domestically, compelling security agencies to heighten counter-terror measures.
Security analysts regard these arrests as a pivotal move in dismantling militant networks operating in Pakistan. Officials have indicated that intelligence-sharing and ongoing operations will persist across various provinces to thwart future attacks and bolster national security. The government remains committed to enforcing strict actions against all banned organizations engaged in terrorism and extremist ventures.
