OpenAI has officially begun accepting applications from third-party developers for integration within ChatGPT. Accompanying this initiative is the introduction of a new ChatGPT App Directory, which can be accessed through the ChatGPT sidebar or by visiting chatgpt.com/apps. It’s important to note that OpenAI describes this not as a store, but as a discovery platform for approved applications.
This enhancement now enables ChatGPT’s expansive user base of over 800 million to seamlessly find and utilize newly vetted third-party applications. After an app is installed, users can easily activate it during chats by typing its name preceded by the “@” symbol or by selecting it from the tools menu. This integration allows users to carry on with their conversations without interruption.
As noted in OpenAI’s blog and communication channels, the application submission process opened on December 17. Each submitted app will undergo a review process to ensure adherence to OpenAI’s public guidelines and safety protocols. Apps meeting these requirements are expected to start becoming accessible to users by early 2026.
In support of developers, OpenAI will host a public webinar called “Build Hour” on January 21. This event will feature OpenAI engineers who will outline the process of building, designing, and submitting apps for ChatGPT and answer questions from developers eager to join this ecosystem.
This launch widens OpenAI’s developer ecosystem, expanding beyond its previous limited set of partners. Previously, OpenAI introduced a GPT Store, which primarily focused on basic text-based utilities. The new App Directory, however, allows for richer interaction, featuring buttons, maps, sliders, and various display options. The older GPT Store will still remain operational alongside this new initiative.
At this initial phase, monetization options for apps are confined. Developers may only direct users to external platforms for selling physical products. Digital sales, subscriptions, or in-app purchases are currently prohibited, although OpenAI indicates that further monetization avenues may be explored in the future. All applications must comply with stringent regulations, including maintaining a clear privacy policy, refraining from advertisements, and being appropriate for a general audience, including teens.
OpenAI asserts that this change elevates ChatGPT beyond a basic chatbot. By integrating applications capable of retrieving live data, executing functions, and showcasing interactive formats, ChatGPT is evolving into a central hub for efficient tools and workflows. This evolution represents a substantial progression towards a more expansive OpenAI developer ecosystem embedded directly within user conversations.
