North Korea has publicly supported Iran’s decision to appoint Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader, according to a statement released by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The announcement comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following military strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel.
Leadership Change After Regional Conflict
According to reports, North Korea said it respects the decision of the Iranian people and their leadership institutions in selecting Mojtaba Khamenei to lead the Islamic Republic. He was named earlier this week to succeed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed during the initial phase of the recent conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
The leadership change marks a major political development in Iran. Mojtaba Khamenei, a cleric long believed to have influence within Iran’s political and security establishment, now assumes the position that holds ultimate authority over the country’s government, military forces, and key national policies.
North Korea Condemns U.S. and Israeli Strikes
In its official statement, North Korea also condemned the recent attacks on Iran carried out by the United States and Israel. Pyongyang described the strikes as “illegal acts of aggression” that threaten global stability and undermine international peace.
The comments highlight the longstanding political alignment between North Korea and Iran. Both countries have frequently criticized U.S. foreign policy and have maintained diplomatic and strategic cooperation over the years, particularly in areas such as defense technology and missile development.
Global Reactions and Rising Tensions
International reactions to Iran’s leadership transition have been mixed. While some countries have acknowledged the internal decision-making process within Iran, others fear that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could intensify following the leadership change.
Analysts say the situation underscores the growing geopolitical divisions as global powers position themselves amid escalating tensions involving Iran, the United States, and their regional allies.
