Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a major friendship and cooperation treaty during a high-level meeting in Pyongyang. The agreement marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations, both of which are facing increasing pressure from Western countries.
During the visit, Lukashenko described the treaty as “fundamental” and emphasized that relations between Belarus and North Korea are entering a new phase. The agreement includes cooperation across multiple sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, and information exchange, signaling a broader strategic partnership.
The meeting also drew attention for the symbolic exchange of gifts between the two leaders. Kim presented Lukashenko with a traditional sword and a decorative vase, while Lukashenko gifted Kim an assault rifle manufactured in Belarus, joking that it could be used “just in case enemies show up.”
Both countries are known allies of Russia and have strengthened ties amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War. Belarus has supported Russia by allowing its territory to be used during the invasion of Ukraine, while North Korea has reportedly provided military support, including troops and weapons.
Analysts believe this treaty reflects a broader geopolitical shift toward a more “multipolar world order,” with countries like North Korea and Belarus seeking closer alliances outside Western influence. The move could also indicate growing coordination between Moscow, Pyongyang, and Minsk in global affairs.
