On Sunday, Blue Origin celebrated the launch of its third New Glenn rocket, reaching a key milestone by successfully recovering a previously flown first-stage booster.
However, this achievement was overshadowed by a significant setback as the rocket's second stage failed to position its payload accurately. The payload, named BlueBird 7, is a direct-to-cellphone communication satellite developed by the Texas company, AST SpaceMobile.
AST SpaceMobile reported that the satellite was placed into a lower-than-anticipated orbit. Even though it successfully separated from the rocket and activated its systems, the onboard propulsion of BlueBird 7 is unable to correct its orbit to the intended altitude.
The company confirmed that under these circumstances, the satellite cannot function properly. Consequently, BlueBird 7 is expected to deorbit and burn up in Earth's atmosphere.
While the successful recovery of the first-stage booster demonstrates progress in reusable launch technology, this incident underscores persistent challenges in achieving mission precision.
