Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has put his intended visit to India on hold once again, initially scheduled for later this year. The trip, which was set to involve discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been delayed due to serious security threats stemming from a recent deadly explosion in New Delhi.
The blast, which occurred two weeks prior, is the most devastating incident the city has endured in over a decade, claiming at least 15 lives and injuring many more. Security agencies from both nations have been intensely monitoring the situation since the attack.
Reports indicate that Israeli officials recommended postponing the visit until a thorough security evaluation is conducted. Netanyahu is anticipated to reschedule for next year, contingent on how the circumstances unfold.
This is the third occasion this year that Netanyahu has either canceled or delayed a trip to India. Previously, he scrapped a one-day visit planned for September 9 due to upcoming elections in Israel and also withdrew from another scheduled visit ahead of the April elections for similar political factors.
Netanyahu's intended visit was regarded as part of a larger strategy to underscore his close ties with global leaders. Recently, various displays bearing his image alongside PM Modi, the US President, and Russia's President were showcased in Israel to bolster his political narrative domestically. His campaign has frequently aimed to portray him as a leader with considerable international sway, particularly regarding national security issues.
Netanyahu last visited India in January 2018, while PM Modi made a landmark journey to Israel in 2017—the inaugural visit by an Indian Prime Minister. The two leaders share a warm rapport, with their interactions frequently highlighted in media from both nations.
For the moment, officials are awaiting an improved environment and enhanced safety conditions before finalizing any new travel arrangements.
