Jerusalem, Nov 17, 2025 – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his strong opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state, reacting to intense pressure from far-right coalition partners upset by a U.S.-endorsed draft U.N. resolution proposing a route for Palestinian autonomy.
This announcement follows recent U.N. Security Council discussions on a draft resolution in support of President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace initiative, which includes a transitional “Board of Peace” for Gaza aimed at economic recovery and reconstruction, suggesting that reforms in the Palestinian Authority could eventually lead to Palestinian self-rule.
Despite the proposal receiving support from significant U.S. allies and several predominantly Muslim countries, it has provoked ire among Israeli far-right leaders. Ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich have insisted that Netanyahu must denounce the notion of Palestinian statehood publicly, with Ben-Gvir threatening to exit the coalition if action isn’t taken.
On Sunday, Netanyahu responded affirmatively, stating: “Our longstanding opposition to a Palestinian state in any territory remains unchanged. Gaza will undergo demilitarization, and Hamas will be disarmed, one way or another. I don’t require lectures or tweets from anyone.”
This sentiment was supported by other ministers, including Defense Minister Israel Katz and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who issued statements opposing Palestinian statehood, albeit without directly naming Netanyahu. The pressure from the far-right points to potential vulnerabilities within Netanyahu’s governing coalition, given that a departure could create instability before the upcoming election slated for October 2026.
Previously, Netanyahu had backed Trump’s Gaza initiative during a visit to the White House in September, though he had largely remained silent regarding the Palestinian statehood topic until now. Far-right officials have since criticized him for perceived inaction, pressing him to assert definitively that a Palestinian state will never be permitted on Israeli soil.
The ongoing Gaza conflict, sparked by a Hamas incursion on October 7, 2023, has led to over 69,000 casualties and extensive destruction throughout the Palestinian territory. A ceasefire was enacted on October 10, 2025, yet occasional violence persists.
Analysts argue that this renewed discourse on Palestinian statehood highlights the precariousness of Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition and the persistent challenges facing peace efforts in the Middle East. The situation also bears significant international implications as Israel deals with pressures from U.S. and European partners, as well as Muslim-majority nations advocating for a dual-state solution.
With Netanyahu and his administration steadfastly opposing Palestinian autonomy, regional tensions remain elevated, and the future of relations between Israel and Palestine remains uncertain.
