Nepal is grappling with a severe political crisis triggered by the abrupt suspension of both houses of the Federal Parliament, ordered by Ramchandra Paudel. This drastic decision coincided with the resignation of Home Minister Sudan Gurung amid accusations of financial misconduct.
The President sanctioned the suspension, following a government recommendation citing “special reasons.” Political analysts and opposition leaders have expressed their alarm at this unexpected maneuver, questioning its timing, especially given the recent reconvening of Parliament.
Gurung's resignation, occurring less than a month post-assumption of office, has stirred controversy. He is reportedly linked to a businessman facing money laundering investigations, chiefly concerning Gurung’s investments in firms associated with the accused, raising significant concerns about ethical standards.
In his resignation statement, Gurung underscored his commitment to facilitating a transparent investigation, stating that public confidence outweighs the urge to retain power. His move is perceived as a proactive measure to mitigate political pressure and enable an unimpeded inquiry.
In the wake of his departure, Prime Minister Balendra Balen Shah has temporarily taken over the Home Ministry. The government is also set to establish a parliamentary committee to delve into the matter, assessing any potential wrongdoing.
The suspension of Parliament has exacerbated political strain across Nepal. Opposition figures have condemned the government’s decision, arguing that halting parliamentary activities during such a critical period undermines democratic integrity and hinders accountability.
This escalating scenario lays bare the persistent challenges within Nepal’s political landscape, where issues of governance, transparency, and institutional stability remain paramount. The forthcoming weeks will be pivotal as investigations progress and political actors seek to reestablish harmony.
