During stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia, Jhonatan Narváez has successfully regained the points classification lead for UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
The Ecuadorian champion secured the iconic maglia ciclamino, or the purple points jersey, by achieving maximum points at the intermediate sprint held on Wednesday’s stage.
Narváez surpassed Paul Magnier of Soudal Quick-Step in the standings. His continuous strong performance, including three stage wins, has been crucial in his quest for the points jersey.
On this stage, Narváez was part of an early breakaway with teammates Jan Christen and Igor Arrieta. They worked in unison to position Narváez perfectly for the intermediate sprint points later in the race.
Arrieta played a significant role in countering an essential attack before Narváez surged forward to claim the highest available sprint points. This impressive feat restored Narváez to the pinnacle of the points classification, allowing him to wear the maglia ciclamino in stage 18.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG was also looking to secure another stage victory during the race. Arrieta demonstrated strong capabilities in the breakaway, finishing just a few seconds behind stage victor Michael Valgren of EF Education-EasyPost.
This result highlights another successful day for UAE Team Emirates-XRG as they continue to excel in the Giro d’Italia.
