Nand Kishore Yadav was sworn in as the 23rd Governor of Nagaland at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan in Kohima on Friday. The oath of office was administered by Justice Ashutosh Kumar in the presence of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer.
Yadav was appointed as the state’s governor by the President of India earlier this month and officially assumed office following the swearing-in ceremony attended by ministers, legislators, senior bureaucrats and representatives of tribal organisations.
He succeeds Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who had been holding additional charge as the governor of Nagaland while continuing to serve as the governor of Manipur.
In his first address after assuming office, Yadav said Nagaland holds a special place in India’s diverse cultural landscape and praised the traditions and resilience of the Naga people. He emphasised that the state’s vibrant heritage and strong community values contribute significantly to the country’s cultural richness.
Highlighting national development initiatives, the governor noted that India is undergoing rapid transformation, with the northeastern region receiving increased investment in infrastructure, connectivity and economic growth. According to him, these efforts are helping integrate the region more closely with the national development agenda while preserving its unique identity.
Yadav also stressed the importance of generating employment opportunities for educated youth through sectors such as tourism, agriculture, entrepreneurship and digital innovation. He said that with proper skill development and institutional support, young people in the state can become job creators rather than job seekers.
Reaffirming his commitment to constitutional responsibilities, the new governor said he would work closely with the state government and all sections of society to promote peace, good governance and inclusive development.
He added that lasting peace and harmony remain essential for Nagaland’s progress and expressed hope that collective efforts would help the state move forward on a path of stability and prosperity.
