Myanmar Votes Amid Civil War and Worsening Humanitarian Crisis

Myanmar Votes Amid Civil War and Worsening Humanitarian Crisis

Post by : Meena Ariff

Myanmar is heading to the polls this Sunday despite being engulfed in a brutal civil war that has devastated large parts of the country. The ongoing conflict, triggered by the 2021 military coup that toppled Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government, has also sparked one of Asia’s worst humanitarian crises.

The United Nations estimates that over 3.6 million people have been forced from their homes, with thousands of civilians killed since the coup. Inflation and a plunging currency have pushed nearly half of the 51 million population below the poverty line, leaving around 20 million people in urgent need of aid.

The World Food Programme warns that more than 16 million people in Myanmar now face acute food insecurity. The situation is dire, with over 540,000 children expected to suffer from life-threatening malnutrition this year—a sharp increase from last year. Chronic hunger and stunted growth affect one in three children under five.

Economically, Myanmar is showing tentative signs of recovery. The World Bank projects a 3% GDP growth next fiscal year, fueled by reconstruction efforts after a devastating earthquake in March and targeted aid. However, inflation remains high, above 20%, and widespread electricity blackouts have driven households and businesses to adopt solar power solutions.

Meanwhile, international relations are shifting. Russia recently signed an investment agreement with Myanmar’s military junta, opening new opportunities for Russian energy firms in the country, despite global sanctions.

As Myanmar prepares to vote, the nation’s future remains uncertain amid conflict, economic hardship, and an escalating humanitarian emergency.
