On Wednesday afternoon, Mount Semeru, an active volcano located in eastern Java, Indonesia, erupted dramatically, ejecting ash and volcanic gas over 13 kilometres (eight miles) into the atmosphere. The eruption inflicted damage on residences and at least one educational facility, resulting in the evacuation of approximately 190 individuals from surrounding slopes, with additional temporary shelters established for many others.
The violent eruption occurred around mid-afternoon, plunging nearby areas into a thick darkness. Residents described the experience as terrifying, with local individual Faiz Ramadhani mentioning that it felt like midnight even though it was merely 4 PM. Volcanic debris and rock fragments partially buried several houses, while one elementary school suffered complete destruction. Nurul Yakin Pribadi, the village chief of Supiturang, reported that a metre-high layer of volcanic material covered his home.
By Thursday, although volcanic activity had diminished, it remained irregular, as noted by the Indonesian Geological Agency. Reports from disaster management authorities indicated that nearly 900 individuals were housed in shelters located in schools, mosques, and community centers. Many opted to stay in these shelters overnight due to lingering fear and trauma from the incident.
Reports indicate that three individuals sustained burns, while rescue teams continued to locate hikers stranded at campsites near the volcano. Rudijanto Tjahja Nugraha, the head of Semeru National Park, confirmed that evacuation efforts were ongoing to ensure public safety.
Mount Semeru has a notorious history; its 2021 eruption resulted in over 50 fatalities and damaged more than 5,000 structures, displacing nearly 10,000 individuals. Situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," Indonesia is home to around 130 active volcanoes, illustrating the region's vulnerability to significant volcanic and seismic events.
Officials are currently evaluating the scale of the destruction and have advised residents to stay vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines as fluctuating volcanic activity persists.
