António Morgado from UAE Team Emirates-XRG achieved an impressive victory at the Trofeo Calvià on Wednesday, marking the start of the Challenge Mallorca. In tough, rainy conditions, Morgado managed to bridge the gap to the leading pack before out-sprinting Spain's Héctor Álvarez in Palmanova.
The race was characterized by short yet challenging climbs that took a toll on the peloton early on. Riders Adrien Boichis (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Ådne Holter (Uno-X Mobility), and Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost) managed to build a significant lead of over 90 seconds prior to the crucial climb.
With 33 kilometers to go, Morgado made a pivotal move amid the rain. Only Álvarez was able to keep pace with him as they aimed to catch the leaders. By the time they reached the Coll de sa Gramola ascent, the five cyclists were together at the front.
During the final climb, Coll de Soma, Álvarez launched an early attack, but Morgado quickly responded, leaving the two to battle it out alone. Unable to separate from each other, they approached the finish line, culminating in an exhilarating sprint where Morgado emerged victorious.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG also celebrated two top-10 placements, with Nils Politt finishing eighth and Rune Herregodts clinching ninth, signaling a robust start to their season.
