In response to rapidly increasing water levels in the Rivière des Prairies, authorities in Montreal have decided to close the Île Mercier bridge to vehicular traffic. The closure, which took effect at 7 p.m. on Monday, is a preventive measure aimed at safeguarding public safety amid heightened flooding risks in surrounding areas.
Linking Île-Bizard to Île Mercier, this key route remains accessible to pedestrians, but drivers are advised to steer clear and take alternative paths. City officials are vigilantly monitoring the situation as fluctuating water levels arise from seasonal shifts and melting snow.
Residents of Île Mercier are bracing for potential flooding, recalling past events in 2017 and 2019 where significant water levels caused extensive damage. Many have proactively adopted safety measures, such as setting up water pumps, utilizing sandbags, and preparing emergency provisions. Some have even secured boats as a contingency for possible evacuations.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada remarked that there are currently no evacuation orders in place. However, authorities remain vigilant, continuously updating their assessments. Additionally, other susceptible areas like Pierrefonds-Roxboro have enacted road closures to mitigate risks to public safety.
As spring unfolds, regions in Montreal prone to flooding face heightened concerns due to warming temperatures generating snowmelt and increased river flow. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to city alerts and take appropriate safety measures. Sandbags are being supplied to those in need, and emergency services are prepared for action.
Meanwhile, in various parts of Quebec, towns like Fort-Coulonge are already grappling with severe flooding. Authorities there have declared a state of emergency and are distributing sandbags to protect homes and infrastructure.
The situation remains under careful observation, with officials calling on residents to exercise caution and remain prepared for any rapid changes as water levels continue to rise.
