Vijayapura, Karnataka: Residents in parts of Vijayapura district experienced light tremors on Tuesday morning when the National Center for Seismology (NCS) recorded a 3.1-magnitude earthquake in the area.
The quake struck at 7:49 am IST and occurred at a shallow depth of about 5 km, briefly unsettling communities but causing no reported harm to people or infrastructure, authorities said.
In an update on X, the NCS provided the event details: “EQ of M: 3.1, On: 04/11/2025 07:49:04 IST, Lat: 16.91 N, Long: 75.75 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Vijayapura, Karnataka.”
Locals described feeling a short-lived vibration and hearing a low rumble, but there were no immediate signs of structural damage. District officials said they continue to monitor the area and reminded residents to follow basic safety measures.
The small tremor follows a severe 6.3-magnitude earthquake in northern Afghanistan on Monday that killed at least 20 people and left more than 640 injured, with shockwaves felt across nearby countries. The quake also caused damage to parts of Mazar-e-Sharif’s historic Blue Mosque.
Other recent seismic activity includes a 5.8-magnitude event in northern Chile and a 4.9-magnitude tremor near Sindirgi in western Turkey—the latter being the town’s third temblor in under three months.
Seismologists say the cluster of quakes across Asia and Europe points to active movements along several fault systems, though the brief Vijayapura event is not viewed as hazardous.
Officials reported no aftershocks linked to the Vijayapura tremor and said the district remains stable. They urged calm while keeping emergency guidelines in mind.
