A former employee of Meta has garnered attention after disclosing her voluntary choice to be included in the latest layoffs. Julie Bone, a Los Angeles-based content designer, expressed that she felt increasingly disconnected from Meta's long-term vision and its pivot towards an "AI-first" culture.
In a candid LinkedIn post, Bone highlighted that her six-year tenure at Meta culminated in this difficult decision. She clarified that it wasn't a hasty choice but rather something she had been contemplating for some time. For her, the company's evolving objectives and her personal career aspirations were no longer in harmony.
The timing also aligned with her personal goals. She mentioned that her voluntary exit might provide an opportunity for another colleague to retain their position amid the layoffs.
Having spent a longer period at the company than many of her peers, Bone reflected that her choice was well thought out. She humorously speculated that she might have been slated for layoffs even before she made her request.
The designer also noted the transformation within the company’s work culture, where employees are now expected to rely on AI tools for tasks like prototyping, coding fixes, and automating repetitive activities. However, she cautioned that simply mastering these AI tools wouldn't ensure job security in the tech landscape.
Her revelations sparked broader discussions online about the implications of automation, restructuring in the tech realm, and the mounting pressure on employees to swiftly acclimate to AI-integrated workflows.
Despite her departure, Bone maintains a strong respect for her colleagues and cherishes the contributions she made at Meta, particularly regarding brand voice and localization projects. She revealed plans for a brief hiatus before pursuing new roles that value creativity and communication skills alongside technical proficiency.
Bone aspires to join teams that prioritize creative thinking and cultural awareness as vital components of the workplace.
