MbS's Strategic US Visit Reinforces Saudi Influence

MbS's Strategic US Visit Reinforces Saudi Influence

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, known as MbS, has arrived in Washington for an important discussion with U.S. President Donald Trump. This visit marks his first return to the White House since the 2018 incident involving journalist Jamal Khashoggi, demonstrating the persistent partnership between Riyadh and Washington, anchored in energy, defense, and geopolitical strategy, despite lingering echoes of past events.

With Khashoggi's death seven years ago still affecting his reputation, MbS has worked diligently to reshape his image into that of a skillful power player. His current agenda includes improving relations with Iran, facilitating a ceasefire in Gaza, and welcoming Syria back into Arab discussions, representing a significant departure from perceptions of previous recklessness, especially concerning the Yemen conflict.

Domestically, at 40 years old, the prince has presided over major social changes. Women are embracing newfound freedoms, participating in the workforce, and enjoying public life, supported by high-profile entertainment events with global icons like Jennifer Lopez. Nevertheless, these reforms coincide with intensified power consolidation; dissent is repressed, critics silenced, and rival factions dismantled, conveying a clear message—advancing modernization in Saudi Arabia requires loyalty to MbS.

Experts view this U.S. visit as a pivotal moment in his trajectory, reflecting an ascent towards a leadership role in the kingdom. Despite his controversial history, the U.S. has been keen on preserving strategic interests tied to energy security, defense collaboration, and technological advancement, highlighted by a $600 billion investment commitment made during Trump’s May 2025 visit.

MbS's rise signifies a notable generational shift in the Saudi royal family dynamics. Being the first ruler descended from King Abdulaziz's grandson, he diverges from the long-standing tradition based on seniority. He has assumed influential roles in defense and economic sectors while orchestrating major shifts within the royal court.

His aspirations extend beyond the political arena, aiming at sports, technology, and energy initiatives. Under his leadership, Saudi Arabia has made headlines with the merger of the LIV Golf circuit and PGA Tour, lured soccer stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, and secured the rights to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games, alongside bidding for the 2034 FIFA World Cup. His omnipresence is evident in media, shopping centers, and advertisements, framing every effort as a leap toward modernity.

Despite ongoing scrutiny regarding decision-making transparency and human rights issues, the visit to Washington underscores Saudi Arabia’s pivotal role in global politics. The discussions with Trump are geared towards fortifying defense accords, ensuring technology exchanges, and enhancing Saudi prominence in energy and artificial intelligence, reinforcing the complex strategic relationship that unites Riyadh and Washington.

As MbS steps into the limelight, his moves will be closely monitored by allies and adversaries alike, aware that the outcomes of this visit will significantly affect Saudi Arabia's future path as well as the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East and beyond.
