Real Madrid secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Real Oviedo in La Liga, but the biggest talking point at the Santiago Bernabeu was the reaction of fans toward star forward Kylian Mbappe. The French striker was loudly whistled by sections of the crowd after returning from injury during Thursday’s match.
Madrid entered the game already disappointed after losing the league title to Barcelona last week. Their recent defeat in El Clasico confirmed Barcelona as La Liga champions, leaving Real Madrid without a major trophy for a second consecutive season. The frustration among supporters was clearly visible during the match against relegated Oviedo.
Young forward Gonzalo Garcia opened the scoring for Real Madrid before halftime with a calm finish after receiving a low pass from Brahim Diaz. The home side controlled most of the match despite playing in front of thousands of empty seats at the Bernabeu stadium.
England midfielder Jude Bellingham later added the second goal after receiving a pass from Mbappe. Bellingham created space inside the box before firing a powerful low shot past Oviedo goalkeeper Aaron Escandell to seal the victory for Los Blancos.
Mbappe started the game on the bench after recovering from a thigh injury. When coach Alvaro Arbeloa sent him onto the field during the second half, many supporters reacted with whistles and boos. Reports suggested some fans were unhappy with the player’s recent holiday to Sardinia while recovering from injury.
Speaking after the match, Mbappe accepted the criticism from supporters and said players must learn to deal with fan reactions. He explained that footballers cannot always understand public frustration but must accept it and work to improve performances in difficult situations.
Despite the criticism, Mbappe has still enjoyed a strong individual season with 41 goals in 41 matches across all competitions before this game. However, many supporters believe the team has lacked commitment and consistency during important matches this season.
The atmosphere at the Bernabeu also reflected wider tensions around the club. Some supporters displayed banners criticizing club president Florentino Perez, while speculation continues to grow about the future of coach Alvaro Arbeloa. Reports have linked former manager Jose Mourinho with a possible return to Real Madrid.
Elsewhere in La Liga, Girona drew 1-1 with Real Sociedad to move slightly away from the relegation zone. Valencia and Rayo Vallecano also shared a 1-1 draw as the battle to avoid relegation continues in the closing stages of the season.
