Manipur CM hails BAFTA win for ‘Boong’ as pride for India

Post by : Shakul

The Manipur Chief Minister, Y Khemchand Singh, hailed the BAFTA win for director Lakshmipriya Devi’s film Boong as a moment of immense pride for both the state and the nation. He said the recognition has placed Manipuri cinema firmly on the global map.

Smt Lakshmipriya Devi’s Boong won the award for Best Children & Family Film at the 79th British Academy of Film & Television Awards (BAFTA 2026) held in London. Produced by Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment, the quirky coming-of-age comedy-drama stood out in the international category for children’s and family films.

Singh stated that the achievement goes beyond an individual honour and highlights the creative strength of Manipur. He added that Lakshmipriya Devi has consistently brought recognition to the state through her cinematic work, and this latest award further elevates the stature of Manipuri art and culture globally.

During the ceremony, Lakshmipriya Devi received the trophy from Paddington Bear, the lead character of the West End production Paddington The Musical. In her acceptance speech, she made an emotional appeal for peace, earning applause from the audience. She was joined on stage by producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, along with the film’s assistant director Rahul Sharda.

The BAFTA recognition marks a significant milestone for regional Indian cinema, as Boong has emerged as a standout entry in the international children’s and family film category. The win brings global attention to Manipuri filmmaking and inspires further recognition for the state’s creative talent.
