A former senior political secretary to Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and a businessman embroiled in a corruption scandal are set to face bribery charges this week, authorities confirmed.
Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin resigned from his role as senior political secretary on Nov 25. He, along with businessman Albert Tei—linked to alleged graft in Sabah mining projects—will be charged at Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court with four counts each of receiving and offering bribes. Additional charges are scheduled at Shah Alam Sessions Court the following day.
Both were arrested separately on Nov 28. Another individual, reportedly acting as Shamsul’s proxy, Sofia Rini Buyong, was also detained but will serve as a prosecution witness and will not face charges. Investigators have collected statements from 32 other witnesses in the case.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation is focused on allegations made public through videos and reports, including claims that Tei had funneled RM629,000 (US$152,215) to Shamsul, allegedly used for home renovations, cigars, and tailored suits.
The controversy gained attention shortly before the Sabah state election, with the allegations raising concerns over conflict of interest and political influence. Tei claimed the funds were intended to secure political support in Sabah, though details remain unclear.
Both Tei and Shamsul face separate allegations, including claims of issuing letters of support in government tenders. Tei has also released covert videos showing alleged bribe negotiations with Sabah state lawmakers, prompting charges against himself and others, which they deny, citing revenge motives.
Investigators have also opened inquiries into Tei’s lawyer, who allegedly refused to cooperate, and authorities have refuted claims of misconduct during Tei’s arrest, citing video evidence and official statements to support their actions.
The case is expected to unfold in the courts in the coming days, shedding further light on the scope of alleged corruption.
